Elon Musk vs NASA and the US rocket industry - ding ding!

The bell has gone for Round One in the epic bare-knuckle battle over the future of US manned space exploration, which is set to run for years and to devolve into a dirty fight indeed.
Yesterday, NASA selected 13 companies for "potential contract awards ... evaluating heavy-lift launch vehicle system concepts, propulsion technologies and affordability". It is these 13 companies who will contend over the next five years to design and then (for some of them) build the new NASA heavy-lift rocket which is to carry US astronauts on missions beyond low Earth orbit for the first time since the 1970s.

Discovery's launch delay shouldn't impact schedule

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — The delay of space shuttle Discovery's launch to the end of the month should not impact the overall schedule for the final missions of NASA's three-orbiter fleet, agency officials said.

A gas leak and a crack on the space shuttle Discovery's external tank forced NASA officials to call off their planned Nov. 5 launch. The earliest Discovery could now lift off is Nov. 30, NASA announced.

If the space shuttle can make the next window that begins Nov. 30, then the following planned mission of the space shuttle Endeavour should be able to launch on time in February, officials said.

Boeing (NYSE:BA) Launches COSMO SkyMed Satellite for Italian Space Agency

The Boeing Company (NYSE:BA) on Nov. 5 successfully launched the last in a series of four SkyMed spacecraft for the Italian Constellation of Small Satellites for Mediterranean basin Observation (COSMO).

A Delta II rocket, procured from United Launch Alliance for Thales Alenia Space, lifted off from pad Space Launch Complex-2W, Vandenberg Air Force Base, at 7:20 p.m. Pacific time. The COSMO SkyMed-4 spacecraft was deployed to low Earth orbit approximately 58 minutes after liftoff. It was the 350th Delta rocket launch in the program’s 50-year history.

“We are delighted to have met the requirements of our Thales Alenia Space customer with this mission,” said Ken Heinly, director, Boeing Launch Products & Services, and president, Boeing Launch Services Inc. “This fourth Delta launch for the COSMO-SkyMed program continues the unparalleled reliability and accurate performance of the Delta II rocket with 93 consecutive successful launches since 1997.”

ATK Reports FY11 Second-Quarter Operating Results

MINNEAPOLIS — ATK (NYSE: ATK) today reported operating results for the second quarter of its Fiscal Year 2011, which ended on October 3, 2010. Fully diluted earnings per share (EPS) rose 33 percent to $2.91, compared to $2.19 in the prior-year quarter. The increase primarily reflects a lower effective tax rate resulting from the favorable settlement of IRS audits of the company’s FY07 and FY08 tax returns. Despite $15 million of higher pension expense, second quarter margins remained strong at 11.1 percent compared to 11.2 percent in the prior-year quarter. The margins benefitted from a continued focus across the company on cost management and efficiency improvement initiatives. Second quarter sales of $1.2 billion were in line with the prior-year quarter. Second quarter net income rose 34 percent to $97 million compared to $73 million in the prior-year quarter.

Hollywood Prepares to Voyage to the Moon

Three Lunar Expedition Projects in Development
President Barack Obama may not be interested in voyages to the Moon because, as he famously put it, Buzz Aldrin has already been there. But a number of voyage to the Moon
film projects in development suggest that Hollywood is interested.

Two projects under development are based on the premise that there were secret Apollo missions to the Moon that took place after the official last voyage to the Moon, Apollo 17, that took place in December of 1972.

"Apollo 18" is being produced by Timur Bekmambetov and directed by Trevor Caewood. "Apollo 18" is in the style of "found footage" as with "The Blair Witch Project" and is based on the premise that a secret Apollo flight was sent and found aliens on the lunar surface. "Apollo 18" is being distributed by the Weinstein Company with a release date of March 4, 2011.

"Dark Moon" is being produced by Warner Brothers and will be directed by Olatunde Osunsanmi. "Dark Moon" has the premise that the Apollo program did not stop with Apollo 17, but went covert. There will also be some "found footage" about what "really happened" during the mission of Apollo 17. No release date has been announced.

Regarding these two lunar projects, one wonders how one keeps Apollo missions to the Moon secret. They would not have been launched from the Kennedy Space Center since a Saturn V tends to be conspicuous and besides the two launch pads were converted to space shuttle launches long ago. My guess is that there is a secret base in the South Pacific.

Of course both projects, which seem to involve meeting space aliens on the Moon, has every potential for cheesiness. However the idea that we never stopped going to the Moon is at least interesting.
